Sustainable Recreational Instructional Design
Recreational Design that;
Paddles... Floats... Feeds...
Since 2022, I have designed recreational afforded experiences, programs, trainings, and online modules for charitable donations, which offsets durable goods that help balance weekly food supply budgets in southern coastal Monmouth County, New Jersey.
Designing ; For Hunger
Fall 2022; The Cage & The Kayak
Kevin begins regular volunteering, loading an outside pantry while tying in concepts from a cultural design class with afforded recreation and food insecurity for what would become - A Paddle; For Hunger.
Spring 2023; ACA Training
In the Spring of 2023, Kevin began training with Tom Nickels, Annapolis, MD to train up to an ACA L2 Instructor.
This designation would become the foundational training supports for his soon to be charity.
Spring 2023; Proof of Concept
Kevin Continued to work non-stop from April through December to register and certify that A Paddle; For Hunger would become a Federally recognized 170(b) Charity - Allowing him to form a board or directors and craft a mission, direction, and organizational goal.
Summer 2024; PFH On the Water
2024 saw A Paddle; For Hunger partner with the D&R Greenway Land Trust, Princeton, NJ, to teach basic ACA L-1 instruction and guide eco-kayakers on the Black Creek, Bordentown, New Jersey
2024; PFH Instructional Gains
Under Kevin’s leadership, A Paddle; For Hunger began to leverage private instruction and private donations and began acquiring assets for instructional goals - full kayak kits etc., through Facebook Marketplace and other outreach opportunities as far west a central PA and as far north as New Have, CT.
5,000 Cups & Counting...
The design tools used by A Paddle; For Hunger has amassed the resources necessary to offset five (5) industrial coffee makers and 5,000 cups, which are used for weekly lunches, N.A., and A.A. Meetings in Southern coastal Monmouth County, New Jersey
IT’s not about me
I’m afforded. I have nine (9) kayaks and all the gear to go with them. I can float anywhere I want any time I want to. My kayak(s) is my escape – it’s also a tool that I can leverage, trading valuable experiences to help those who muddle through.
The 2023 design model, A Paddle (PFH); For Hunger, is rooted in the belief that instructional design can be combined with on-water training, and safety instruction.
To date, PFH has poured 5,000 cups of coffee and by providing industrial coffee makers that assist with weekly meetings, meals, and pantries.
The duality of this design model helps me, help you.
DEsign approach
Because you will fall in... Can you get back?
Paddling Basics. Risk Assessment. Rescue.
L-1 PAddling Basics
Intro to Kayaking is the introduction class where you will learn core skills to enhance your on-water experience. We focus on strokes, boat control, and basic navigation- building the toolkit for safe passage.
Kayak Risk Assessments
There are two types of kayakers... those that have fallen in, and those that will.
Both L1 and L2 teach self-rescue skills necessary to help you be safe on the water, giving you a chance to help yourself first and others second.
L2 Rescue Assistance
Rescue assistance is more common than you think.
Knowing basic boat-to-boat towing and other on-water directive techniques helps you help someone in distress, is tired, or (honestly) is just a little lazy.
